Chester
Standard Donkey
Chester is the prankster of the barn! This rambunctious donkey loves to wrestle with his mama, chase others around the field and even tries to boss Blue and Solomon. He is quick to pick pocket a nearby human- whether gloves or a cell phone, it really doesn’t matter! And he is the reason we put extra safeguards in place to avoid random escapes.
Chester is the son of Sugar. This momma-son duo was rescued by NarroWay. Sugar had a hard start in life, but Chester knew little of that.
Chester is a standard donkey. He came to us at just 2 months old. Chester was born July 13, 2020, and arrived at NarroWay on September 24 of the same year.
Shortly after he got off the trailer, he met his first veterinarian and farrier. Because Chester was in a group of discarded donkeys, he was unkept. Chester’s hooves were in terrible condition and had been from birth, likely because of his mother’s malnutrition. While much has been done, his hooves still require special care.
Though not full grown, Chester is now taller than his mother. While not as heavy and strong as she, he still tries to boss her around. She quickly puts him in his place! His fluffy black coat will one day become sleek like Sugar’s, but for now he still sports his “baby coat.”
Like Sugar, Chester was not accustomed to being handled by people when he came to NarroWay. But with much love and gentle attention, he warmed up quickly. And, miraculously, both Chester and Sugar were on stage in front of an audience within a month. Chester was even trained to walk on stage by himself for his special part in “The Real Christmas Story.”
Chester loves to spend time with Sugar and Patty, our miniature donkey. Typically, all three can be found together. He is good buddies with Solomon, who shares his youthfulness and his curious nature. He is mischievous and has been known to open gates, steal props and annoy his mom and the rest of the herd for attention. He loves people and is always interested when someone comes around. He loves to wear costumes. In fact, he will wear just about anything, including cowboy hats and chaps! He is generally good-natured and always ready for a treat!
Chester is on stage for all biblical shows as well as “The Gospel According to Tennessee.” He is especially featured in Act 1 of “The Real Christmas Story.”
